Home Learning Policy


Introduction

At School of Christ the King Catholic Primary, all children are involved in events and activities that link home and school. This involvement begins in EYFS (Nursery & Reception) and as the children get older the school welcomes parental support for an increasing range of tasks which the children bring home.

Aims and objectives

  • To enable pupils to make maximum progress in their academic and social development

  • To promote early enjoyment of reading

  • To help pupils develop the skills of an independent learner

  • To promote a strong partnership between home and school in supporting every child’s learning

  • To enable all aspects of the curriculum to be covered in sufficient depth

  • To provide educational experiences not possible in school

  • To consolidate and reinforce learning achieved in school and to allow children to practise skills taught in lessons

  • To help children develop good work habits for the future

The role of parents/carers

Parents/carers have a vital role to play in their child’s education, and home learning is an important part of this process. The school ask parents to encourage their child to complete the tasks that are set; to help their children as they feel necessary and provide them with the sort of environment that allows children to do their best.

Parents and carers can help by:


  • Providing a good working space at home,

  • Providing the focused attention of an adult (especially with younger children)

  • Allocating a specific time for learning to be done

  • Discussing the task before it is started

  • Reading regularly with their child

  • Providing encouragement when the work is underway           

  • Offering praise and discussing the work when it is finished

  • Taking part in any workshops that the school offers

If parents have any problems or questions about the learning tasks, they should, in the first instance, contact the child’s class teacher who will offer support. Teachers prefer parents to let them know if a child is experiencing difficulties with any tasks.


Home Learning Timetable

Children will receive a range of home learning activities which will develop over time as they become more independent in their learning. Specific days will be conveyed in a timetable given to parents.

Weekly: Spellings,  All Times tables, Doodle Maths, Maths activity and Maths activities from Abacus

Monitoring and review

Effective use of home learning is a feature of good teaching.

Phase leaders will monitor adherence to the policy.

During the year the policy will be discussed in staff and SLT meetings to gauge how well it is working.

Governors will agree the effectiveness of the policy as part of their role.
